NTT Corporation has successfully demonstrated optical signal transmission at a record speed of 455 terabits per second (Tbps) over a distance of 1,000 km in a real-world environment. This milestone was achieved through space-division multiplexing (SDM) technology, utilizing 12-core optical fibers, significantly increasing transmission capacity compared to conventional single-core fiber systems.

Background & Technological Innovation

As global data demand surges with AI, 5G, and future 6G applications, traditional optical communication systems face scalability challenges. Conventional single-core fibers have limited capacity, necessitating new approaches to expand bandwidth while maintaining efficiency and compatibility.

NTT's breakthrough relies on multi-core fiber (MCF) technology, where multiple optical signal paths (cores) are embedded within a single fiber, enabling parallel data transmission without increasing the physical number of cables. The experiment also integrated advanced signal processing and optical amplification techniques to ensure low signal loss and minimal crosstalk between cores, maintaining high data integrity over long distances.

Significance & Future Impact

The field test demonstrated stable data transmission despite external disturbances, confirming the feasibility of MCF for long-haul, high-capacity optical networks. This advancement paves the way for next-generation backbone infrastructure, supporting the ever-growing need for high-speed data transfer in cloud computing, AI, and telecommunication networks.

NTT presented this achievement at an international optical communication conference, marking a critical step toward the commercial deployment of SDM-based optical networks, which could revolutionize global data transmission.
